Goals and CrossFit

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why am I doing CrossFit?” Most typical answers are “It’s fun”, ” For the community”, or ” I want to be healthy.” These are all great reasons to explore the realms of CrossFit. However, you will see greater success in yourself if you understand your CrossFit “goals”.

Understanding that CrossFit is constantly varied relatively high intensity functional movement is the box owner and coaches goal. Specificity is not the intent of CrossFit. Using a generalists approach to fitness in the three modal domains allows the coach to design an unlimited number of WODs. However, the members need to have a goal orientation in order to focus their CrossFit training.

It’s 2015… So I am pretty sure that you all are aware of “SMART” goals. Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Now take the generalists approach to fitness. “We need to lift large loads, long distances, quickly, across broad time in modal domains.” That means, we need to lift heavy, lift fast, have stamina, have cardio respiratory endurance, have balance, have speed, and the list goes on and on. That is a lot to focus on in terms of the everyday CrossFitter. I’m here to simplify your list and make it easier by giving you 3 easy challenges.

1. “What is your overall goal?”

This is the broadest and long term statement ever created by man. However, you can make this very simple by stating what type of person you want to be in life. Pick one of the following: Better Co-worker, parent, athlete, spouse/relationships.

Now, think personally… What does it take to make you a little better one day at a time? Maybe it’s more help around the house. Maybe it’s doing something common, uncommonly well for your co-workers. Etc.

2. “Set a goal on your daily WOD”

Look at the WOD the night before, ask yourself what will make you attain a better you for that WOD. For example, if your a cardio respiratory endurance animal but struggle to lift heavy loads, maybe it’s time to try to lift more than the 15# KETTLEBELL on “Helen”. Making yourself do things that you didn’t think you could will usually give you a new perspective on you. YOU CAN DO MORE… (With great mechanics, consistently, and adding intensity.)

3. “Some days you have to fail”

Perseverance and diligence speak volumes in comparison to getting a high rep count or finishing under the time that you set because you “bro repped” to get their. Remember that you learned mechanics is the most important element of CrossFit. It should be the first goal in your head every day. If the mechanics of the movement requires you to slow down and not finish the WOD because your goal required you too, do it!
